Twenty-six kilometres from Dera Baba Nanak is the industrial town of Batala, renowned as a manufacturing hub for agricultural machinery. It is also well known because Guru Nanak Dev was married here. There are three gurdwaras here: Gurdwara Kandh Sahib, Gurdwara Dera Sahib and another one where Guru Hargobind’s son got married.
To access Gurdwara Kandh Sahib, one drives through narrow winding lanes. This is where Guru Nanak Dev’s marriage procession first arrived. While waiting for the hosts to formally receive the guests, the bridegroom sat down to relax by a wall. An old lady cautioned him that the wall could collapse any moment. The Guru replied that the wall would survive for a long time to come. Indeed, even today, a portion of the wall can be seen, preserved in a glass case next to the Guru Granth Sahib.
