Kartarpur Sahib

Kartarpur in Jalandhar district is 65 kms from Amritsar on the Grand Trunk Road. It was founded in 1594 by the fifth guru, Guru Arjan Dev. His successor, Guru Hargobind lived here for some time and two of his sons, Suraj Mall and Tegh Bahadur were married here.

Among the prominent gurdwaras of Kartarpur is Gurdwara Thamm Sahib. A sandalwood post (thamm) stands in the Gurdwara, Guru Arjan Dev had stuck it into the ground exclaiming “This shall be the support of our faith”. The Afghans destroyed this building in the mid-eighteenth century. The present building is a seven-storeyed structure constructed by Maharaja Ranjit Singh.

Gurdwara Sheesh Mahal was the residence, while in Kartarpur, of both Guru Arjan Dev and Guru Hargobind and houses some sacred relics of the two gurus, including the original copy of the Guru Granth Sahib compiled by Guru Arjan Dev.

Gurdwara Babe di Ber to the east of the town, is dedicated to Baba Gurditta, the eldest son of Guru Hargobind. Gurdwara Gangsar Patshahi Panjvin te Chhevin is constructed at the site of a well Guru Arjan Dev had sunk.

Gurdwara Vivah Asthan marks the house where Guru Tegh Bahadur and Mata Gujri were wed in 1633. Gurdwara Tahli Sahib, some 2 kms south of the town, commemorate the site where Guru Har Rai halted on his way from Goindwal in 1658.
